Murmuration

The river of the night
Is rolling over the fields
The shadows stretch out
Across the autumn trees
Clouds of starlings
Rise up in the west
Back and forth they swirl
Back and forth
Back and forth

Who knows if we will make it
Before the night falls
Take the road to the bridge
Follow the stone wall
The river rushes under us
The starlings swarm in heaven
Back and forth in the sunset
Back and forth
Back and forth

They murmur over the dark wood
And fall like black silk
They sing in the oak and pine
Into the darkness of the hill
And in the sudden quiet
Even the river lies still
Looking for rest in the sunset
Looking for rest
Looking for rest

Then with a rush
The starlings take to the sky
With a roar among the stars
The starlings take flight
Sweeping over us
In the heavy fall of night
In the murmur of starlings
In the murmur
In the murmur
